Maya is a fascinated little girl. In her child's world, emotions are magnified, everything around her is immense. She overflows with affection and navigates a magical universe with carefree innocence, where everything is pure in her eyes. From the steppes of Asia to the outskirts of Buenos Aires, she passionately discovers unknown landscapes and is part of an incredible scenario where everything is in constant transformation. Her dream is her life, her most intimate view of humans and the world. Her journey is everyone's journey, a universal dream where everything is emotion. Her name means "love" in Nepal, "illusion" in India, and "dream" in Sri Lanka. "Le reve de Maya" could signify "The Dream of Love," "The Dream of Illusion," or "The Dream of Dream."
"Le Reve de Maya" is to date the only double concerto for cello, accordion, and symphony orchestra in the repertoire. It consists of 3 parts, an overture, and a final movement. The musical writing of this work gives birth to a new idiom by bringing together distant concepts where the written coexists with the improvised. In this composition, Samuel Strouk sheds unconventional light on the heritage of musical languages and draws on various sources of inspiration such as Astor Piazzolla, Ianis Xenakis, Gyorgyi Ligeti, Henri Dutilleux, W. A Mozart, Maurice Ravel, as well as Hindustani, Manding, and Caribbean traditional music. This highly virtuosic score for the two soloists explores in depth the possibilities of the cello and accordion duo and unveils a new palette of tones and colors linked to these two instruments.
